Lacquer vs. Raw Brass
While we do not offer lacquering services here at our shop, we feel that it is very important for someone who is looking to purchase an instrument to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the different types of finishes that are available. Most of the horns that we sell are finished in either raw brass, silver or gold plate. This section of the website is for informational purposes.
When buying a horn there are two main options for the final finish - lacquer or raw brass. A third common option is silver (or nickel) plating--we will also discuss these finishes (as well as gold plating). Please click on a button below for more information.
There is also an ongoing project that we are conducting. We have been frustrated at the lack of concrete information available with regards to the actual differences between different bell and leadpipe sizes and tapers. These can vary wildly between different makes and models, but what do any of the differences actually mean? We are endeavoring to find out, and this is where we will post our findings.
